“こっさん”です

I am a Japanese Zen monk, my name is Reikou Mukai, but my friends all call me “Kossan”. I was born in1947. I am married, and have one son and two daughter and two grandchildren.
When I was 18 years old, my father suddenly died of a heart attack. This was the real beginning of my search for a true and happy life. Luckily two years later, I came across Zen Master Rinzai`s saying “a true man without rank”. I was deeply impressed by these words. Soon I would meet Zen Master Oi-Saidan Roshi and started to practice Zen under his guidance. After one year I experienced Kensyo (Zen enlightenment) in a Rhohatu-Sessin. This has been the greatest experience of my life. In 1976 I became a Zen Monk in order to practice Zen more thoroughly. In 1983 I received Inka,a Japanese term meaning the ‘seal of enlightenment’ or certification of the authenticity and depth of a student's experience of enlightenment from Oi-Saidan Roshi. My master Oi-Roshi was died on 27th, 2018 at the age of 103. He had been the abbot of Hokoji-Monastery in Hamamatsu. He is living forever inside me. I will continue Zen way following a lifetime master of Oi-Roshi.
